The position:

Driving innovation and hardware automation is a key focus for our manufacturing sites around the world. The Director, Hardware Automation position is crucial for ensuring the right strategies are deployed across Celestica’s 30+ site manufacturing network to stay current with the latest trends in automation and to further the development & deployment of advanced automated manufacturing hardware solutions globally. 

 

The successful candidate will work on a comprehensive strategy for the development and implementation of automated solutions in the following areas:

 

(i) Replacing/improving existing manual operations

(ii) New Product Introductions

(iii) New Customer accounts

 

This role requires an in-depth knowledge of complex automated assembly equipment development, cost estimation, installation and management.  The successful candidate will work closely with Operations VPs & Site General Managers, as well as influence other functions including Sales, Site Engineering, Operations, and Quality to ensure goals are met and conflicts are resolved in an effective manner.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identifies opportunities for optimising manual operations through the deployment of automation to improve quality, cost and scalability.
  • Responsible for determining the capital & operational cost inputs for each business case and supporting the Sales team to achieve price automation efficiency into customer proposals.
  • Supports site engineering teams to source suitable hardware solution providers.
  • Oversees the design, build and delivery of automated solutions to Celestica factories.
  • Partners with Site General managers to ensure appropriate site resources are hired to effectively deploy the targeted solutions.
  • Responsible for the technical direction of site teams to achieve automation deployment, meet capital spend targets and KPIs.
  • Maintains a catalogue of proven automation solutions & business case templates from Celestica’s network and redeploys these standard solutions at other sites as appropriate
  • Assesses all of Celestica’s major sites annually for Automation maturity & opportunity, ie, “Automation Index”
  • Influences internal stakeholders and external customers to ensure goals are met.
  • Stays current in industry best practices and leading trends and seeks out new avenues to further Celestica’s hardware automation program.   

 

Measures of success:

Candidate will be measured on: 

  • # Solutions successfully deployed per year
  • Annual run-rate savings from deployed projects

 

Experience:

  • 10 to 15 years operating at a Senior Manager/Director level in a relevant industrial setting. Experience working for a Hardware Automation Equipment manufacturer and/or for a manufacturing organisation where automated assembly is mature. Financial acumen is essential as all automation programs must be backed by a sound business case. 
  • Broad experience in automated manufacturing in the market segments Celestica supports, including communications technology, enterprise technology, aerospace and defence, smart energy, medical devices, industrial and semiconductor equipment.
  • Extensive experience as a recognised Hardware Automation integrator, holding positions in design, build and business development (i.e. quoting hardware solutions, which is highly preferred)
  • Solid understanding of Automation solution providers globally and the ability to script optimal solutions (providers, timelines, cost, quality considerations) for given challenges/ situations
  • Desirable to have prior experience developing internal capability to design, develop and implement solutions for hardware automation and challenge external solution providers for speed and cost.
  • Desirable to have a lean six-sigma background to ensure automation plans are for leaned out processes

 

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies:   

  • In-depth knowledge of industry requirements, quality standards, and engineering best practice methodologies.
  • In-depth knowledge of material science/engineering, robotics, and machine programming.
  • Ability to incorporate data and process feedback “real-time” into hardware solutions
  • In-depth knowledge of automated equipment pricing.
  • Excellent customer contact, negotiation and problem resolution skills.
  • Excellent project management, presentation, database management and computer skills.
  • Strong knowledge of statistical process control methods and techniques.
  • Ability to simultaneously drive several projects and coordinate multiple, changing deadlines.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a wide variety of internal and external customers.
  • Biased toward action and committed to delivering results is a must.  Successful candidate must be a “roll-up your sleeves”, hands-on, execution oriented leader. 

 

Education:   

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.       

 

Travel:

  • 50% to 60% travel across various Celestica sites and the HQ in Toronto, Canada
