Summary:
The Test Development Engineer designs, develops and implements automatic test equipment and test programs for product testing and design verification which ensure robust and high quality assembled products in manufacturing. The Test Development Engineer may specialize in many areas but are generally categorized into Structural (verification of an assembly process by testing each of its smaller elements and their interconnects) and Functional (verification that a design will perform its main purpose).
Activities – Product Test Development Support:
- Provide input on the initial design and development of product test solutions including both software and hardware elements based on provided customer requirements
- Involvement in all areas of the test development release process, including specification and procurement of parts, hardware & system integration, software revision support, performing characterization, qualification and installation support for manufacturing
- Integrate tools and code developed by other internal groups or external customers
- Debug of solutions using design of experiments, tools, and failure analysis methodologies
- Implement production test systems in a manner which optimizes utilization of critical resources and maximizes throughput, repeatability, and reliability while minimizing cost and growing capacity
- Productivity project leadership, including managing an action tracker and working with team members from development and production support to drive improvement
- Communication with remote development team members, external suppliers and customers
- Collaborate with experienced engineering teams to review and provide input on development designs
- Apply a continuous improvement mindset to all aspects of the development process and operation support
- Travel to Toronto test development site from time to time
Knowledge / Skills / Competencies:
- Bachelor of Applied Science or Engineering in Computer, Electrical, Software, or Computer Science
- Knowledge of materials and components used in the construction of electronics, printed circuit boards and electrical subassemblies
- Electronics industry and production quality standards
- Ability to evaluate technical documentation, gather and analyze data, and determine root cause of problems
- Testing software, processes and methodologies and failure analysis
- Knowledge of cable television signal distribution technologies, including Cable Set-top-boxes, Routers and other distribution hardware
- RF technologies and concepts (up to 10GHz)
- Experience with Cellular Communications preferred (4G-LTE and 5G)
- Optical Communication technologies and concepts
- Knowledge of IT platforms, databases and programming languages appropriate to area
- Minimum 1-2 years of software development experience with minimum one language (National Instruments LabView, C# - C++, or Python preferred)
- Project leadership, organizational skills and ability to manage multiple activities
- Ability to effectively communicate with a variety of internal and external customers
- Engineering development and manufacturing operations support (preferred, not mandatory)
- Operations background (electronics manufacturing experience preferred, not mandatory)
- Some hardware development, integration and qualification (preferred, not mandatory)
Physical Demands: Duties of this position are varied and will include:
- Lab work including assembling test equipment, racks of instruments, running cables, wiring and pcb assembly
- Normal office environment with exposure to manufacturing environments
- May require extended periods of sitting and sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or on numbers and other detailed data
- Repetitive manual movements are frequently required (e.g. data entry, computer mouse, calculator, etc)
- Infrequent travel to Toronto Canada development location
Typical Experience: 3-5 years’ relevant experience
Education: Bachelor of Applied Science or Engineering in Computer or Electrical or Software, or Computer Science
