Summary

Reporting directly to the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Manager, the Safety Specialist is responsible for the daily administration, monitoring, and enforcement of safety programs across the electronics manufacturing floor. This role focuses on maintaining a "safety-first" culture, ensuring continuous compliance with OSHA General Industry standards (29 CFR 1910), and mitigating hazards unique to electronic component assembly, such as automated equipment risks and high-voltage electrical exposure.

Detailed Description

Core Responsibilities
Floor Inspections & Hazard Control
Daily Site Audits: Conduct routine inspections of SMT (Surface Mount Technology) assembly lines, wave soldering machines, and cleanrooms to detect and eliminate safety hazards.
Lockout/Tagout (LOTO): Audit and manage the facility’s OSHA LOTO program during automated machinery maintenance to prevent accidental energy startups.
Electrical Safety Oversight: Monitor compliance around high-voltage testing equipment, ensuring appropriate use of non-conductive PPE, protective guarding, and proper grounding.
Job Hazard Analysis (JHA): Conduct and update risk assessments for new or modified production machinery before integration into workflows. [9]


Incident Response & Employee Training
Incident Investigations: Lead root-cause analysis for workplace injuries, near-misses, and equipment incidents alongside the EHS Manager, utilizing tools like the 5 Whys or Fishbone diagrams.
Safety Training Delivery: Facilitate OSHA-mandated onboarding, recurrent safety briefings, and weekly toolbox talks for floor operators and contract partners.
Emergency Response Team (ERT): Serve as a core member or coordinator of the on-site emergency and spill response teams.


Compliance, Data & Tracking
OSHA Recordkeeping: Maintain and organize the facility's OSHA 300, 300A, and 301 incident logs under the supervision of the EHS Manager.
Metric Analytics: Track monthly safety performance data, identifying trends to propose proactive preventative measures to leadership.

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field preferred (or equivalent combination of high school diploma/Associate’s degree and hands-on manufacturing safety experience).

  • Experience: 2–4 years of dedicated safety experience within a high-volume manufacturing environment (electronics, automotive, or aerospace assembly preferred).

  • Certifications: Possession of, ability to obtain in first 90 days,OSHA 30-Hour General Industry card is required. Progression toward an ASP (Associate Safety Professional) or CSP (Certified Safety Professional) is a plus.

  • Technical Skills: Strong familiarity with general machinery guarding, electrical hazard protocols, and ergonomics related to repetitive electronic assembly tasks.

Physical Demands

  • Duties of the position are performed in a manufacturing environment with frequent exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, operating machinery, temperature extremes, hazardous substances, etc.
  • Duties may require extended periods of sitting and sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or on numbers and other detailed data. 
  • Repetitive manual movements (e.g., data entry, using a computer mouse, using a calculator, etc.) are frequently required.

  • Three to six years of relevant experience
