Detailed Description

Performs tasks such as, but not limited to, the following:

  • Conduct inspections of structural steel welding in adherence to AWS standards.
  • Perform visual evaluations of non-destructive testing conducted by external parties or suppliers.
  • Oversee inspections carried out by suppliers or external entities when necessary.
  • Interpret fabrication blueprints and specifications for New Project Introduction (NPI) and ongoing projects.
  • Effectively communicate with stakeholders including suppliers, clients, contractors, supervisors, and fellow inspectors regarding specifications, test results, project progress, and requirements.
  • Maintain comprehensive fabrication or inspection records and pertinent documentation.
  • Collect inspection data and measurements to complete required checklists, ensuring quality assurance throughout various fabrication stages.
  • Document any deviations found during inspections and provide recommendations for corrective measures to ensure adherence to contract plans and specifications.
  • Train others on welding inspections and follow directions effectively.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies

  • Proficiency in visual inspection and nondestructive testing of welds with demonstrated experience; familiarity with AWS Welding Codes/Standards preferred.
  • Capability to comprehend structural steel plans, technical drawings, and specifications.
  • Competency in utilizing weld inspection instruments.
  • Ability to accurately interpret plans and specifications and generate reports as required.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Aptitude for working independently with minimal supervision.

Physical Demands

  • Sitting/standing, free to move around
  • Walking
  • Sustained visual concentration on small areas, such as monitors, screens
  • The job works in generally good conditions with occasional exposure (10% - 33%) to noise, odours, dust, drafts, chemicals, operating machinery, temperature extremes, hazardous substances, etc.
  • Occasional overnight travel is required.

Typical Experience

  • Minimum 10 years relevant experience in a manufacturing environment with experience in material, welding, NDE. 

Typical Education

  • Diploma’s / Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical, welding, materials, manufacturing engineering or related discipline.
