Manager, Electrical Design Engineering

Summary

The Functional Manager (FM), Design Engineering role is responsible for the strategic direction, operational excellence, and talent development within a specific engineering service function in a designated site. He/She ensures the efficient and effective delivery of high-quality engineering services, aligning with project requirements, company objectives, and industry best practices. He/She fosters a collaborative and innovative environment, driving continuous improvement and technical expertise locally and in partnership with the global functional team. By leveraging technical mastery and refined communication capabilities, the FM navigates technical and operational obstacles, promotes extreme ownership, and removes execution barriers across cross-functional groups. The FM actively manages resource allocation, fosters professional development, and guides direct reports to meet individual growth aspirations and organizational demands. Building upon established functional performance, the leader will scale department capabilities to satisfy expanding business needs.

Detailed Description

Performs tasks such as, but not limited to, the following:

• Functional Leadership and Strategic Planning

  • Implement the strategic vision and roadmap for the assigned engineering service function, aligning with overall company goals.

  • Develops and leads a customer service focused culture within functional teams and customer projects.  Monitors customer satisfaction and project health as an indicator of performance.

  • Lead the deployment of strategic (Global Engineering) improvements within function, and coordinate site-wide deployment efforts.

• Team Management and Talent Development

  • Manages resources and costs effectively: Develops and adheres to operating plans and budgets for capital and direct expenditures while balancing the needs of the employee, the customer and Celestica

  • Recruit, onboard, and retain top talent, ensuring the team has the necessary skills and expertise.

  • Develop functional group engineers, technicians, and support staff, fostering a high-performance culture.  Requires the leveraging of mentorship and training strategies integrating technical leaders and SMEs for detailed technical development.

  • Identifies and develops leaders within the functional team to ensure healthy leadership succession. Provides effective career coaching and mentorship to accelerate career growth.

  • Collaborates with other design centers and business units to understand their expertise, tools, processes, and capabilities to ensure Celestica’s strengths are utilized.

  • Set yearly plans and goals for the department, give direction on expected performance, provide regular performance evaluations and ongoing feedback. Accountable for all department objectives and achieving agreed targets for key performance indicators.

• Project Execution and Delivery

  • Oversee the delivery of engineering projects on time and within budget within the assigned functional area. Assist with root cause analysis, problem solving, and review of technical outputs

  • Review and ensure strong technical content in business proposals and quotes within the respective discipline to increase the win rate.

  • Technical Knowledge and Innovation

    • Ensure that the team is equipped with the necessary tools and resources to perform their tasks effectively.

    • Ability to provide technical guidance and support to the team, resolving complex problems and engineering challenges.

    • Keep up to date with relevant industry knowledge and regulations, recommending and implementing improvements to enhance functional capabilities.

  • Process Improvement and Quality Assurance

    • Define and establish functional standards, processes, and best practices to ensure consistency and quality across projects

    • Actively supports compliance with and improvement of Celestica processes and the quality system through leadership of the continuous improvement and CAPA processes.

    • Implement and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to track functional performance and identify areas for improvement.

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies

Technical Competencies:

The Functional Manager is not intended to execute engineering work within projects, but to facilitate, equip, oversee, and review technical work. The FM thus will have technical skills in discipline sufficient to provide such oversight, but may not extend to the depth and breadth of capabilities in the team.

• Project Management - Ability to manage/lead multiple line engineering projects that may also involve other functions. Demonstrate solid understanding of the technical, financial and people aspects of the project. Able to create a project/change management plan and ability to recognize project risk and develop mitigation plans

• Financial Acumen / Business Planning - Ability to create financial plans for your function and relevant projects, align them internally with your line of management and other functions and externally if needed. Fully knowledgeable about internal and external financial reporting.

• Other:  Communication/Negotiation/Presentation; Creative Problem Solving; Customer Interaction/Stakeholder Management; Quality System knowledge and integration into programs/projects.

Physical Demands

• Duties of this position are performed in a normal office environment.
• Duties may require extended periods of sitting and sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or on numbers and other detailed data. 
• Repetitive manual movements (e.g., data entry, using a computer mouse, using a calculator, etc.) are frequently required.
• Occasional travel may be required.

Salary

The salary range described in this posting is an estimate by the Company, and may change based on several factors, including by not limited to a change in the duties covered by the job posting, or the credentials, experience or geographic jurisdiction of the successful candidate. Salary Range: $107k-$147k Annually

Typical Education

A Bachelor’s of Science in Electrical Engineering or equivalent. Master’s degree in engineering or business is a plus.
