Summary
The Associate Engineer, SMT Process Engineering is responsible for designing, developing, deploying, and optimizing surface mount technology processes to achieve quality, cost, and delivery goals for Celestica and its customers. This role focuses on the technical aspects of PCBA (Printed Circuit Board Assembly), including pick-and-place programming, solder paste deposition, and reflow profiling.
Detailed Description
Performs tasks such as, but not limited to, the following:
- Develop and implement SMT manufacturing applications and programs (Pick-and-Place, AOI, SPI) to support new customer product introductions (NPI).
- Define and troubleshoot process problems that lead to throughput or quality issues.
- Perform thermal profiling of reflow ovens to ensure solder joint integrity and compliance with IPC standards.
- Monitor and analyze process data (First Pass Yield, DPMO) to identify trends and implement solutions to stabilize and improve processes.
- Support the evaluation of new SMT equipment, coordinate software/hardware upgrades, and assist in setting equipment specifications.
- Collaborate with design teams to provide Design for Manufacturing (DFM) feedback to reduce costs and improve reliability.
- Support the development and updating of assembly work instructions and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Knowledge, Skills & Competencies
- NPI-PCBA Knowledge: Basic understanding of Solder Paste Deposition (screening/jetting), Stencil Design, SMT component placement, and Reflow.
- Technical Standards: Familiarity with IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001 standards.
- Analytical Skills: Sound logical thinking and ability to use statistical methods for process control (SPC).
- Software Proficiency: Knowledge of MS Office (Excel/PowerPoint) and CAD software; experience with SMT programming software (e.g., Aegis, Valor) is an asset.
- Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills to interact with global teams and customers.
- Problem Solving: Ability to participate in root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
Physical Demands
- Duties of this position are performed in a combined office and manufacturing floor environment.
- Duties may require extended periods of sitting and sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or on numbers and other detailed data.
- Repetitive manual movements (e.g., data entry, using a computer mouse, using a calculator, etc.) are frequently required.
- Occasional travel may be required.
Typical Experience and Education
- Entry level: 0-2 years of experince
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Manufacturing Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Salary
The stated range includes Base Salary and target Short-Term Incentive (STI) compensation only. A comprehensive benefits package is offered in addition to this range.

Salary Range: $67,000-$87,000 CAD/year
