Role Overview

Celestica is looking for a Mechanical Assembly Engineer who will be responsible for designing, optimizing, and overseeing the physical mechanical assembly processes of electronic products, particularly the "box build" or final integration phase where circuit boards are installed into enclosures. The individual in this role will ensure complex electro-mechanical assemblies are manufactured efficiently, with high quality, and to exact specifications.

Performs tasks such as, but not limited to, the following:

  • Solves assigned technical product, process, component or material problems affecting efficient production of products under the guidance of more experienced engineers.
  • Develop and optimize mechanical assembly processes for complex electro-mechanical assemblies "box builds," specifically focusing on high quality installation of PCBAs into custom enclosures according to customer specifications

  • Lead conceptual tooling and fixture development, designing modular assembly stations and specialized hardware (press-fit, alignment, and torque stations) while protecting PCBA sensitivity and managing layout complexity.

  • Improve equipment effectiveness and manufacturing tolerances for delicate electronic components, implementing Poka-yoke (error-proofing) and enhancing overall build quality.

  • Contribute to and drive improvements in equipment stability, automation, and "intelligence" to ensure repeatable, high-yield production.

  • Create 3D CAD models and detailed drawings using GD&T for manufacturing and assembly. Prepare motion studies and FEA for intricate designs, utilizing a strong understanding of dynamics, force/stress analysis, and solid mechanics.

  • Select and integrate commercial components, including sensors, servos, pneumatic actuators, and ESD-safe hardware.

  • Provide critical feedback on performance, design simplicity, robustness, and ease of installation during the prototyping phase.

  • Provide mechanical engineering support to fabrication, project management, and production teams to troubleshoot design issues and implement machine performance enhancements.

  • Strong understanding of drafting standards and the application of GD&T (ASME Y14.5).
  • Proven proficiency in designing mechanical equipment, fixtures, and production layouts in both 2D and 3D environments.
  • Ability to create detailed drawings for diverse fabrication techniques (CNC, manual machining, welding, sheet metal forming, 3D printing) and mechanical assembly methods (press fits, fastener selection).
  • Knowledge of automated equipment systems, including robotics, vision systems, material handling, conveyors, and PLCs.
  • Strong grasp of solid mechanics, material selection, prototyping, Design of Experiments (DoE), and testing methods.
  • Experience with test systems, industrial sensors, and specialized equipment (pogo-pins, pressure transducers, temperature controllers, etc.) is a significant plus.
  • Experience writing professional production documentation, including checklists, process flow diagrams, and SOPs.
  • Proven track record with new equipment installations and New Product Introduction (NPI) startups.

Physical Demands

  • Duties of the position are performed in a manufacturing environment with frequent exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, operating machinery, temperature extremes, hazardous substances, etc.
  • Duties may require extended periods of sitting and sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or on numbers and other detailed data.
  • Repetitive manual movements (e.g., data entry, using a computer mouse, using a calculator, etc.) are frequently required.

Typical Experience and Education

  • 4 - 6 years of relevant experience
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Educational requirements may vary by geography.
