Summary

The Optical Inspection NPI Process Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, deploying and optimizing processes for manufacturing to achieve quality cost and delivery goals for Celestica and its customers products.

Detailed Description

Performs tasks such as, but not limited to, the following:

  • provides the necessary technical support and coordinates the construction of prototypes, ensuring that new components are made on time and within budget;
  • acts as a project manager for projects in which the Site Engineering department is involved;
  • is responsible for the design of equipment in the Optical Inspection process;
  • is responsible for the evaluation and introduction of new Optical Inspection equipment / processes;
  • is responsible for the development / improvement process of electronic products on the Optical Inspection side;
  • creates new programs for the Optical Inspection processes for new electronic products;
  • reviews and interprets specifications received from customers;
  • provides engineering expertise for all technical issues related to customer products, from their design to their commissioning;
  • works closely with the customer to design new products;
  • collects, understands and transforms data received from customers into manufactured products;
  • verify that product specifications are in accordance with customer, industry and company standards;
  • assist in the selection and programming of production equipment;
  • assist in the production of the first batch of new products;
  • coordinate and perform component selection and qualification;
  • act as the focal point for all technical product issues;
  • interact with customers to resolve issues to improve product quality and yield;
  • may provide engineering support and coordination for the construction of a prototype to ensure that products are completed on time;
  • may lead a work team or project team composed of 1 or more support people and/or professional staff with little guidance from his/her supervisor, or may provide support and assistance in his/her area of ​​expertise;
  • seeks new opportunities to build internal and external relationships, maintaining current relationships;

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies

  • Advanced English skills;
  • Relationship, communication and teamwork skills;
  • AOI & SPI Programming: Proficiency in setting up, tuning, and programming Solder Paste Inspection (SPI) and AOI machines (e.g., Koh Young);
  • Machine Vision & Image Processing: Deep understanding of optical algorithms, lighting techniques, and camera calibrations to detect micro-soldering defects, tombstoning, and component misalignments;
  • Electronics Manufacturing Processes: Knowledge of Surface Mount Technology (SMT), reflow soldering profiles, and component placement tolerance;
  • Quality Standards (IPC-A-610): Strict adherence to international acceptance criteria for electronic assemblies;
  • Defect Root Cause Analysis (RCA): Ability to trace inspection failures back to pick-and-place errors or printer issues, ensuring closed-loop corrective actions.

Physical Demands

  • Duties of this position are performed in a normal office environment.
  • Duties may require extended periods of sitting and sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or on numbers and other detailed data. 
  • Repetitive manual movements (e.g., data entry, using a computer mouse, using a calculator, etc.) are frequently required.
  • Occasional travel may be required.

Typical Experience

  • 4 to 6 years in a similar role or industry.

Typical Education

Bachelor degree or consideration of an equivalent combination of education and experience (Electronics, Automation or Mechanical Engineering).
