The Rework&Robot/Hand Soldering NPI Process Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, deploying and optimizing processes for manufacturing to achieve quality cost and delivery goals for Celestica and its customers products.
Detailed Description
Performs tasks such as, but not limited to, the following:
- provides the necessary technical support and coordinates the construction of prototypes, ensuring that new components are made on time and within budget;
- acts as a project manager for projects in which the Site Engineering department is involved;
- is responsible for the design of equipment in the Rework and Hand Soldering process;
- is responsible for the evaluation and introduction of new equipment / Rework and Hand Soldering processes;
- is responsible for the development/improvement process of electronic products on the Rework and Hand Soldering side;
- creates new rework profiles for new electronic products;
- designs tools for the Rework and Hand Soldering process;
- reviews and interprets specifications received from customers;
- provides engineering expertise for all technical issues related to customer products, from their design to their commissioning;
- works closely with the customer on the design of new products;
- collects, understands and transforms data received from customers into manufactured products;
- verifies that product specifications comply with customer, industry and company standards;
- assists in the selection and programming of production equipment;
- assists in the production of the first batch of new products;
- helps determine inspection criteria for received materials;
- proposes to customers the possibility of improving/modifying the Rework and Hand Soldering process for manufacturing at a reduced cost and higher quality;
- acts as a focal point for all technical issues of the product;
- interacts with customers to resolve issues to increase product quality and yield;
- may provide engineering support and coordination for the construction of a prototype to ensure that products are completed on time;
- can lead a work team or project team composed of 1 or more support and/or professional staff with little guidance from his/her supervisor, or can provide support and assistance in his/her area of expertise;
- seeks new opportunities to build internal and external relationships, maintaining current relationships;
- supports the transition from customer requirements to the manufactured product and participates with colleagues in this exchange;

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies
- Advanced English skills;
- Relationship, communication and teamwork skills;
- Micro-soldering & rework stations: Manual dexterity in operating hot-air pencils, infrared (IR) reflow tools, and micro-soldering irons to remove/replace tiny Surface Mount Devices (SMD);
- BGA/QFN Rework: Precision profiling, replacing, and reballing of Ball Grid Arrays (BGAs) without causing thermal damage to adjacent components or delamination of the PCB;
- IPC Certification: Strict adherence to industry standards—particularly IPC-7711/7721 (Rework, Modification and Repair of Electronic Assemblies) and IPC-A-610 (Acceptability of Electronic Assemblies);
- Schematic and Gerber reading: The ability to trace circuit paths, interpret engineering documentation, and use diagnostic tools like digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers;
- Root Cause Analysis (RCA): Applying structured methodologies (like 5-Whys or Fishbone diagrams) to distinguish between catastrophic and latent failures.
Physical Demands
- Duties of this position are performed in a normal office environment.
- Duties may require extended periods of sitting and sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or on numbers and other detailed data.
- Repetitive manual movements (e.g., data entry, using a computer mouse, using a calculator, etc.) are frequently required.
- Occasional travel may be required.
Typical Experience
- 4 to 6 years in a similar role or industry.
Typical Education
Bachelor degree or consideration of an equivalent combination of education and experience (Electronics, Automation or Mechanical Engineering).
