The Sr. Director of Design Engineering Services is responsible for maintaining key client relationships, developing new clients, and overseeing all aspects of project activity within the Industrial & Smart Energy (I&SE) markets. 

About this opportunity

Provides direct and indirect supervision to all subordinate managers and employees at multiple sites performing highly specialized roles in several major functions or departments. This includes long-term planning, objective setting, policy formation, interpretation and management while providing latitude and discretion to subordinates. Accountable for projects or programs on a multi-national or global basis. Work requires investigating and resolving a wide variety of highly unusual conditions that carry long-term implications. Requires developing new strategies, policies, practices, methods, programs or techniques and utilizing them to analyze and interpret difficult problems or situations and/or establishing new strategic direction that is site or multi-site specific. Participates with other senior managers to establish strategic plans and objectives. Has overall responsibility for planning, budgeting, implementing and maintaining costs, methods and employees in a functional area. Makes final decisions on administrative and operational matters in area of responsibility to ensure achievement of objectives. Assigns objectives, reviews performance and approves employee compensation, coaches for improved performance. Regularly interacts with executives and/or major customers. Interactions normally involve controversial situations, customer negotiations, or influencing and persuading other senior level managers. May represent the organization in public speaking venues and/or community events.

Detailed Description

Perform tasks such as, but not limited to, the following:


  • Directs all of the activities of the ISE Solutions team, and coordinates the execution of programs across sites. 

  • In conjunction with ISE Leadership and Product Management, defines the vision and develops the annual operating plan (AOP) for the ISE Solutions Team. Collaborates with ATS Engineering leadership to establish capability and competency requirements to execute the strategies.

  • Develops annual goals for the ISE Solutions team, in support of the ISE strategy and AOP.

  • Identifies target markets and customers aligned with the ISE strategy. 

  • Identifies organization’s strengths as well as those of the competitors. 

  • Directs the provision of engineering design services from customer requirements through product obsolescence. 

  • Interfaces with existing and potential customers. 

  • Communicates regularly with existing customers to provide information, escalate issues and create and enhance a positive working relationship. 

  • Delivers presentations and communicates capabilities to potential customers, including at alliance and trade conferences or similar events. 

  • Works with potential customers to help define their needs and to present technical proposals to meet those needs. 

  • Ensures proposals meet requirements for design profitability, manufacturing profitability, etc. 

  • Interfaces with other design centers to develop complementary services and coordinate capabilities worldwide.

  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of the business unit and how decisions impact customer satisfaction, product quality, on-time delivery and the profitability of the unit.

  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of engineering design and development, testing, quality and production in a highly dynamic manufacturing environment.

  • Broad knowledge of an electronic manufacturing environment, materials and processes.

  • Excellent analytical, negotiation and problem resolution skills.

  • Ability to establish business unit goals and coordinate a wide variety of resources to meet quality and quantity metrics.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with a wide variety of internal and external customers.

  • Ability to effectively lead, manage, train and motivate a diverse group of employees to meet high levels of technical requirements within tight time deadlines

Physical Demands

  • Incumbent will perform the duties of this position in a normal office environment.

  • Moderate to frequent overnight and international travel is required.

Typical Experience

Fifteen plus years’ relevant experience

Typical Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field, or consideration of an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

  • Advanced studies in Business/Operations/Technology are recommended.

Salary Range: $198k-$295k Annually

Location: This is a remote position, with travel as necessary. We are open to considering candidates close to any of our US locations in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Texas, Arizona, Oregon or California as well as locations near major airports such as the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest and Pacific Coast.
