Summary

Work requires application of in-depth knowledge of professional standards and precedents in area of specialty. Works on complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires and in-depth evaluation of various factors. Incumbents are accountable for quality of work delivered by external suppliers as applicable. Incumbents have decision-making authority and autonomy to deliver on goals of team. Influences others outside of team to ensure goals are met and resolves conflicts in an effective manner. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals results in additional costs and serious delays in overall schedules of a site and/or regional function. May lead a multi-functional work group or project team consisting of one or more support staff and/or tech/professional staff, or may provide advice and guidance in area of specialty. May determine new methods and procedures. Seeks out new avenues for building internal and external relationships; maintains contacts with existing relationships. Interfaces with senior managers on issues related to the area of expertise. Interacts with and influences management and/or customers on significant issues.

Detailed Description

Performs tasks such as, but not limited to, the following:

  • Provides the necessary engineering support and coordination of prototype build to ensure that new assemblies are completed on time and on budget.
  • Provides feedback to appropriate engineering and support groups to ensure smooth transition from prototype to production.
  • Accountable to supporting the business units with all technical issues that arise relative to purchased materials during the NPI phase.
  • Most of the time is spent developing plans, conducting activities or reviewing different levels of BOM of electronic assemblies.
  • Responsible for providing technical advice to component engineering groups and with customers to facilitate planning, determine technical direction or solve technical problems.
  • Works with Marketing and Sales Support on target customer accounts to help win new business.
  • Works with other Celestica sites to standardize dealing with both the customer and suppliers using common processes and practices.
  • Responsible for understanding the customers technical roadmap and identifying and managing all new customer-specific process development projects.
  • Understands and influences customers technical requirements.
  • Identifies and manages all new customer-specific process development projects.
  • Owns the development schedule. Interacts with the customer on DFM/DFT input with the goal of reducing manufacturing cost and improving quality and reliability of product.
  • Provides yield, reliability and cost comparisons of various options.
  • Identifies and implements opportunities to reduce manufacturing complexity.
  • Ensures accurate and timely communication to management on critical technical and business issues.
  • Works with cost engineers developing models to estimate resource requirements and costs.
  • Acts as project manager for the introduction of new processes, new products or new equipment. Defines the problem, coordinates the team, directs work assignments and assists with problem resolution.
  • Evaluates alternatives and implements solutions. Supports the marketing function by presenting company technological capabilities and roadmaps to potential and new customers.
  • Participates in customer audits and supports customer tours.

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies

  • Engineering Foundation Competencies
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of the design process for printed circuit boards, subassemblies, or other related company products.
  • In-depth knowledge of manufacturing processes and equipment used for printed circuit boards and subassemblies.
  • In-depth knowledge of industry and quality standards and SPC methodologies.
  • In-depth knowledge of materials and components used in the construction of printed circuit boards and subassemblies.
  • In-depth knowledge of material science, robotics, machine programming.
  • In-depth knowledge of product pricing, contracts and contract negotiations.
  • In-depth knowledge of design engineering (e.g., analog circuit design, digital circuit design, digital integrated circuit design, etc.) for printed circuit boards.
  • In-depth knowledge of IT platforms, database design and programming languages.
  • In-depth knowledge of manufacturing and SCM/Logistics information processes.
  • Excellent customer contact, negotiation and problem resolution skills.
  • Excellent project management, presentation, database management and computer skills.
  • Strong knowledge of statistical process control methods and techniques.
  • Ability to design tests, evaluate results and recommend solutions to improve the processes associated with SMT manufacturing.
  • Ability to evaluate, diagnose and troubleshoot problems.
  • Strong knowledge of IT platforms, database design and programming languages.
  • Strong knowledge of some or all of the following: UNIX, NT, database management system.
  • Ability to evaluate materials, gather and analyze data and determine root cause of problems.
  • Ability to simultaneously manage several projects and coordinate multiple, changing deadlines.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a wide variety of internal and external customers.
  • Ability to effectively organize, manage and motivate team members from a wide variety of departments and with a diverse group of skill sets.

Physical Demands

  • Duties of the position are performed in a manufacturing environment with frequent exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, operating machinery, temperature extremes, hazardous substances, etc.
  • Duties may require extended periods of sitting and sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or on numbers and other detailed data.
  • Repetitive manual movements (e.g., data entry, using a computer mouse, using a calculator, etc.) are frequently required.

  • Eight plus years of experience

Typical Education

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
