Summary
The Lead Engineer, Mechanical Design develops new mechanical systems/modules and maintains existing designs. Research mechanical concepts and create system solutions using 3D modeling and simulation software. Complete calculations and test, validate, and qualify their systems and make adjustments as needed. Provide support throughout the manufacturing process of the mechanical system that they have designed.
The Lead Engineer, Mechanical Design works with cross functional teams of other engineers, customers, supply chain and project leadership to ensure robust and high quality product development. Enhance designs with feedback from reviews in areas such as manufacturing, test, supply chain, reliability, industrial design and simulations.
Detailed Description
Performs tasks such as, but not limited to, the following:
- Design, modify, and implement complex mechanical systems using cross-functional engineering inputs, FEA/CFD analysis, cost metrics, and DFx principles to develop detailed 3D models and manufacturing schematics.
- Perform rigorous quantitative calculations, including structural strength, stress, and tolerance stack-up analysis, to validate proposed concepts prior to final drawing release.
- Execute innovative technical solutions across multiple engineering domains while leading small-scale projects, resolving complex cross-functional architectural challenges, and reviewing the work of fellow engineers.
- Finalize component designs for fabrication, consolidate final engineering specifications, and release detailed blueprints and manufacturing prints to the production department.
- Provide hands-on technical guidance, oversight, and hardware troubleshooting throughout prototype construction, assembly, and the final manufacturing lifecycle.
- Present technical illustrations, design frameworks, and engineering documentation to leadership, internal teams, and global clients to secure collaborative alignment and formal authorization.
- Review and translate customer technical documentation with minimal direction, performing necessary investigative research and validation to establish precise product specifications.
- Partner with program management to formulate comprehensive technical proposals, architectural frameworks, and realistic mechanical development timelines.
- Ensure all mechanical designs strictly adhere to internal corporate procedures, global industry mandates, and specific client quality standards.
- Evaluate customer data, field feedback, and analytical performance reports to optimize, modernize, or rectify existing hardware and legacy machinery.
Knowledge/Skills/Competencies
- Extensive background in mechanical engineering for server, switch, and data center infrastructure across cross-functional teams and various product development lifecycles.
- Solid understanding of material properties, production workflows, and tolerance, stress, and thermal assessments; kinematic modeling proficiency is advantageous.
- Strong grasp of industry mandates and environmental requirements at the system level.
- Expert CAD skills, with Creo required; proficiency in SolidWorks and AutoCAD preferred.
- Capable of utilizing Microsoft Office applications effectively for documentation and data management.
- Sound fluency in English, both verbal and written, with the capacity to thrive in global team environments.
- Strong interpersonal aptitude, emphasizing collaboration, teamwork, and effective information exchange.
Physical Demands
- Duties of this position are performed in a normal office environment.
- Duties may require extended periods of sitting and sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or on numbers and other detailed data.
- Repetitive manual movements (e.g., data entry, using a computer mouse, using a calculator, etc.) are frequently required.
- Occasional travel may be required.
Typical Experience
- 5 to 8+ years of relevant experience in mechanical design or a similar engineering role.
Typical Education
Bachelor degree or consideration of an equivalent combination of education and experience.
