Summary
Knowledge/Skills/Competencies
Required Knowledge
This is what they need to understand "in theory" to be successful:
-
Schematic Literacy: Ability to read complex electrical schematics and map them to physical PCB layouts.
-
Component Recognition: Deep knowledge of electronic components (resistors, capacitors, ICs, MOSFETs) and their packages (0201, BGA, QFN).
-
ESD Protocols: Strict understanding of Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) safety to prevent damaging sensitive prototypes.
-
Basic Circuit Theory: Understanding of Ohm’s Law and signal integrity to identify why a circuit might not be performing as expected.
Technical Skills:
-
Micro-Soldering: Expertise in soldering under a microscope, specifically for tiny SMT components and fine-pitch ICs.
-
Measurement Tools: Proficiency with Digital Multimeters (DMM), Oscilloscopes, Spectrum Analyzers, and DC Power Supplies.
-
Firmware Flashing: Ability to use debug probes (J-Link, ST-Link) to flash initial bootloaders or firmware onto the hardware.
-
Troubleshooting: The "detective" skill—using a logical process to find out why a board isn't turning on or communicating.
Soft Skills:
-
Attention to Detail: Prototypes are expensive; one wrong connection can destroy a board.
-
Communication: The ability to explain a technical failure to a Design Engineer clearly.
-
Detailed Description
To provide hands-on technical support during the transition from design to physical prototype, ensuring that hardware is assembled, powered on safely, and validated against design specifications.
-
Initial Power-On: Execute "smoke tests" and initial power-up sequences to ensure the board doesn't short-circuit.
-
Hardware Validation: Use lab equipment to verify voltage rails, clock signals, and communication protocols (I2C, SPI, UART).
-
Documentation: Maintain detailed logs of hardware bugs, "blue wire" fixes (manual jumps), and assembly issues to feed back to the design engineers
-
Test Fixture Setup: Build or assemble basic test jigs and cables needed for functional testing.
Physical Demands
Typical Experience
- 1- 3 years of experiences in technical support with electrical or electronics manufacturer
Typical Education
